Organizing and implementing data governance organizations and programs needed to manage data and information as a key enterprise asset

  • Defining and implementing an enterprise data management strategy and roadmap and aligning the strategy with corporate imperatives
  • Partnering with technology and business units to drive the definition, prioritization and implementation of data initiatives
  • Defining, implementing and overseeing an organization’s data management goals, standards, practices, process and technologies
  • Addressing issues and concerns associated with organizational change
  • Building return on investment (ROI) models associated with data governance programs
  • Organizing and streamlining processes with which data is collected, shared, utilized, protected, cleansed and stored
  • Establishing decision rights regarding valuation and management of data
  • Creating governance models that address decision making authority, compliance monitoring, policies and standards, data inventories, full lifecycle management, content management, records management, preservation, data quality, data classification, data security and access, data risk management, and data valuation
  • Serving as a liaison between both internal and external technical and business groups
  • Travel 50% - 75% of the time

Qualifications and Experience

 Team Leadership

  • Strong experience with leading and implementing and data governance initiatives across lines of business, including management of executive level relationships
  • Excellent leadership, influencing, facilitation and partnering skills
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to "roll up sleeves"
  • Experience with managing data governance specialists, data stewards, data architects, subject matter experts and business analysts

Data Stewardship

  • Oversight of the compilation and use of the data defined by the data stewards
  • Implementing processes and standards for data definition and usage including quality, control and accuracy
  • Experience and knowledge with inspecting, cleaning, understanding and transforming data

Business Acumen

  • Business acuity and experience with imparting information across the corporate structure effectively and efficiently
  • An ability to bridge the gap between business and IT by streamlining definitions and making sure that the time and effort of the data stewards and project team is not wasted
  • An understanding of the inner workings of the business
  • A strong work ethic and a skillset geared toward business management

Data Governance Drivers

  • Familiarity with external data regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley, Basel III, HIPAA, etc.
  • Understanding the guidelines referenced by COBIT, ISO/IEC, 38500, etc.


  • Cross-functional skill set for coordinating information and data between departments and stakeholders
  • Strong multi-channel communication skills that include reports, meetings, presentations and company newsletters
  • Solid technical writing foundation.

Tools and Technology

  • Familiarity with and knowledge of relational systems, big data concepts and Hadoop
  • Prior experience with implementing large data integration initiatives such as data warehouses and MDM solutions
  • Technical understanding of tools used for data integration, data transformation, data profiling, data cleansing and master data management
  • Knowledge of data models and data modeling tools
  • Familiarity with dimensional concepts as well as top-down, bottom-up and hybrid methodologies
  • Knowledgeable on metadata and metadata management tools
  • Experience with MDM implementations is a plus
